AreYouOK Safety Check-in Application

Last updated: 2026-06-18

In short: AreYouOK collects only what's needed to keep you safe — your check-ins, contacts, family links, and (with permission) activity and one-time location for alerts. Health and motion data are used only for automatic check-in, never for ads, and never leave your control. We don't sell your data.

This summary is translated for your convenience. The English version of this policy is the legally authoritative one.

Introduction

Welcome to AreYouOK ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and related services (collectively, the "Application").

Please read this privacy policy carefully. If you do not agree with the terms of this privacy policy, please do not access the Application. By using the Application, you consent to the collection and use of your information as outlined in this policy.

Note: AreYouOK is designed as a safety application that allows you to perform daily check-ins and notify emergency contacts if you fail to check in. Your safety and privacy are our top priorities.

Information We Collect

Personal Information You Provide

When you register for an account, we collect information that you provide directly to us, which may include:

  • Account Information: Your name, optional phone number, time zone, and a user ID
  • Emergency Contact Information: Names, email addresses, and phone numbers of your designated emergency contacts
  • Check-in Data: Timestamps and the days you confirm you are safe
  • Going-Out / Outing Data: Outing timers you start, optional notes, and due times
  • Family / Caregiver Links: Invite codes and the connections between people who watch over each other (care circles)
  • Duress Protection: Your safety and duress PINs are stored only on your device (in the iOS Keychain) and are never sent to our servers
  • App Settings: Your preferences for reminders, automatic check-in, and notifications

Health & Motion Data (Automatic Check-in)

If you turn on Automatic Check-in, the Application reads limited activity data — such as step count from Apple Health (HealthKit) and device motion — on your device to infer that you are active and safe. This data is used only to confirm your daily safety check-in.

HealthKit commitment: We never use Health or motion data for advertising or marketing, never sell it, and never store it in iCloud or share it with third parties. Automatic check-in can be turned off at any time in Settings.

Location Data

Location is requested only with your permission ("While Using the App") and is captured as a one-time reading at specific moments — when you start an outing, open the Going-Out Safety screen, or trigger an emergency or duress alert. We do not track your location continuously or in the background.

Information Collected Automatically

  • Device & Push Information: Device type, OS version, and an Apple Push Notification token used to deliver safety alerts
  • Usage Data: How you interact with the Application, such as feature usage and check-in frequency
  • Subscription Status: Whether you have an active Plus or Family plan (purchases are processed by Apple; we never receive your card details)

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • To Provide and Maintain the Service: To create and manage your account, provide safety check-in functionality, and notify emergency contacts when necessary
  • To Ensure Your Safety: To monitor check-in patterns and activate emergency protocols when you miss a scheduled check-in
  • To Communicate with You: To send you important notifications about your account, check-in reminders, and safety alerts
  • To Improve Our Application: To understand how users interact with our Application and make improvements to enhance user experience and safety features
  • To Comply with Legal Obligations: To meet any applicable laws, regulations, or legal processes

Alerts to Contacts & Family

The Application notifies your emergency contacts and connected family members when: you miss a daily check-in, an outing timer runs overdue, you trigger an emergency (SOS), or a duress code is entered. An alert may include:

  • Your name and what happened (missed check-in, overdue outing, emergency, or duress)
  • The time of your last successful check-in
  • Your last known location, when available (shared via a map link)
  • Guidance on how to follow up

Alerts are delivered by email (to emergency contacts) and by push notification (to connected family using the app). Emergency alert emails to your free contact are always sent at no cost.

Data Sharing and Disclosure

We respect your privacy and only share your information in the following circumstances:

With Your Emergency Contacts & Family

We share your information with your designated emergency contacts and connected family members only when a safety event occurs (a missed check-in, an overdue outing, an emergency, or a duress trigger). Family members you connect via an invite code can see your safety status; you can disconnect at any time.

Payments (Apple)

Subscriptions (Plus and Family) are purchased and managed through Apple's App Store. Apple processes all payments; we never receive or store your payment card information. We only record whether a plan is active so we can enable the corresponding features.

Service Providers (Notifications)

We use Apple Push Notification service to deliver alerts and an email delivery provider to send notification emails. These providers process only the data needed to deliver your safety messages.

For Legal Reasons

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g., a court or a government agency).

Service Providers

We may employ third-party companies and individuals to facilitate our Application, provide the Application on our behalf, or assist us in analyzing how our Application is used. These third parties have access to your information only to perform these tasks on our behalf and are obligated not to disclose or use it for any other purpose.

Business Transfers

If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your information may be transferred. We will provide notice before your information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

Important: We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.

Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures designed to protect your personal information from accidental loss, unauthorized access, use, alteration, and disclosure. These measures include:

  • Encryption of sensitive data in transit and at rest
  • Secure authentication and authorization mechanisms
  • Regular security assessments and vulnerability testing
  • Access controls to ensure only authorized personnel can access user data

Despite our efforts, no security measures are perfect or impenetrable. We cannot guarantee the absolute security of your information transmitted through our Application.

Your Responsibility

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activities that occur under your account. Please notify us immediately if you become aware of any unauthorized use of your account.

Your Privacy Rights

Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information:

Access and Correction

You can access and update your personal information directly within the Application settings. You can modify your profile information, emergency contacts, and notification preferences at any time.

Data Deletion

You may request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us at the email address below. We will process your request within 30 days, subject to any legal obligations to retain certain information.

Opt-Out Rights

You can opt out of non-essential notifications through the Application settings. However, safety-critical notifications related to missed check-ins cannot be disabled as they are fundamental to the Application's purpose.

Do Not Track

Our Application does not respond to Do Not Track signals as we do not engage in cross-site tracking.

International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and maintained on computers located outside of your state, province, country, or other governmental jurisdiction where the data protection laws may differ from those of your jurisdiction.

If you are located outside the United States and choose to provide information to us, please note that we transfer the data to the United States and process it there. By using the Application, you consent to this transfer, storage, and processing.

For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), we ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your personal data in accordance with applicable data protection laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
